The Pixy CMUcam5 Image Sensor is a fast vision sensor you can quickly "teach" to find objects, and it connects directly to Arduino and other controllers. It’s great for robotics or any other application that requires computer vision. Pixy pairs a powerful dedicated processor with the image sensor. Pixy processes images from the image sensor and only sends the useful information (e.g. purple dinosaur detected at x=54, y=103) to your microcontroller. And it does this at frame rate (50 Hz). The information is available through one of several interfaces: UART serial, SPI, I2C, USB, or digital/analog output. Connecting the Camera Module to Pi:

A 15 cm ribbon cable attached to the module slots straight into your Pi Camera Serial Interface port (CSI). Once connected, you can access the camera board via the Multi-Media Abstraction Layer (MMAL) or the Video for Linux (V4L) APIs. Alternatively there are libraries such as Picamera Python, and many others that you can find online.

This Serial JPEG Color Camera module is a compact size, low power consumption, and stable operation. 5.0V DC Supply. UART: Up to 115200bps for transferring JPEG images. The camera uses the advanced Omni Vision OV7725 VGA color sensor JPEG CODEC for different resolutions. The camera also features down sampling, clamping and windowing circuits for VGA, QVGA, and no need for external DRAM. The use of the Omni Vision CMOS VGA color sensor makes this a low powered consumption unit.


The interface of this module is using RS232 protocol. If you are planning to use it with MCU UART then add a MAX232 Interface between this camera and your MCU so that conversion can be made between UART level of MCU which usually works at 5V and RS232 level of camera.

This Module uses OV7670 image sensor, which is small in volume, works at low operating voltage, and provides all functions of a single chip VGA camera and image processor. Through SCCB bus control, the sensor can output the whole frame, sampling, and various resolution of 8 bits of data. The product VGA image can reach up to a maximum of 30 frames per second. Users can completely control the image quality, data format and transmission mode. All the process of image processing functions can be through the SCCB programming interface, including gamma curve, white balance, saturation and chroma .

The OV7670 is a low cost image sensor DSP that can operate at a maximum of 30 fps and 640 x 480 ("VGA") resolutions, equivalent to 0.3 Megapixels. The captured image can be pre-processed by the DSP before sending it out. This preprocessing can be configured via the Serial Camera Control Bus (SCCB). The datasheet has protocol.
In addition, OmmiVision image sensor has been in application of unique sensor technology, by reducing or eliminating the optical or electronic defect such as fixed pattern noise, tail, floating away, etc., to improve the quality of the image, and get the clear and stable color images.
